Horsemanshit of the day photo

more icelandic horse horrible riding. What is the problem.... is this horse so untrained it takes brutality to handle it? Who would have thought someone could make a simple snaffle bit an instrument of torture.... sheesh!

I am curious how you can post comments of abuse and ill riding on this picture based of one momment when further down on your blog you post a picture of the "best horse in america" with a Hackamore/gag/elevator/single twisted wire contraption to control, is this truly better?

Hi Janice, I left a post but can't find it. It was last night. I also emailed you about it. What gives?

Anyway, the upshot of my post was that it's time these horses get the respect that they deserve and the rider's from HELL get the disrepect that they deserve. I'm FURIOUS about this abuse and IT IS ABUSE, make no mistake. If I can teach myself how to ride a rack, stepping pace, and flying pace (aka speed rack) then what's THEIR PROBLEM? As for the comment from Shanddel, well one picture is worth a thousand words. Good riding doesn't entail a severe frame. I don't care what type of horse you are sitting on, if the frame is severly hollow OR severly round you are not riding you are a bully and also don't know how to ride. Ninety percent of riding is FEEL. The only thing this rider is feeling is a cranked, miserable, poor moving horse at the flying pace. How should the horse go at the flying pace? Check out EDZ'S FALCON ROWDY. Watch and learn. Bit this; I ride in a 3/8ths inch loose O-ring snaffle and if my mare ever looked like this I would throw it away. We use no nose band and no curb. She gets to carry it where SHE WANTS IT TO SIT in HER MOUTH and she can see where she's going too. So, Shaundel, I can post that this is abuse without any hesitation whatsoever. It's abusive squared. I'm not cutting anyone any slack about this. I'm done with that. Get polite with the racking horse and respectful of their amazing abilities. These horses are magnificent and this rider should be dumped!

For me this is "calling the kettle black!"

I don't know if this is an expression used in America.

But your picture:

doesn't look great either... auwch...

I know it's a Myler combination bit, with a hackamore, but you pull on one rein, while standing still, pulling the horses lips to one side. The mouthpiece looks really thin. When I see this I see the same as I guess you see in the picture I am now commenting on. I feel sorry for the horse.

Paso Finos are sometimes ridden with the same kindness, although the bitting systems are much different. The point is, that if you ride with kindness and training, the horse will carry itself beautifully and will not have the ugly U-Neck. With time and work comes fitness and beauty.

The Amazing Janice

My photo
Fountain, Florida, United States
Janice McDonald resides in a tiny Northwest Florida Hamlet just north of Fountain Florida and South of Dothan Alabama. She is employed as a bureaucrat and Govt. Professor and has many interesting and amazing views on the way things are, and should be. Everyone tells her she should write a book but New York publishers are not interested in publishing interesting writers anymore because times are hard and they can't take a risk and publish anyone unless they are already Stephen King or Danielle Steel. Janice owns several horses of various gaited breeds, one donkey, Curly Ray, who has his own blog, two parrots, three dogs, several chickens and geese and three cats.

It takes a big strong man to control a fuzzy little pony! Yee Hawww

Biglick vs Bell Boots

Tennessee Walking Horses Wear Padded Weighted Shoes
Icelandic horses wear padded weighted bell boots
Tennessee Walking Horses wear long shanked bits
Icelandic Horses do too, along with tight dropped nosebands cutting off all air so they can't breathe
Tennessee Walking Horses are ridden in a chair seat so that rider weight on the loins causes pain, ventroflexion of the back and a racking gait
Icelandic horses are ridden in tight, illfitting narrow saddles by riders sitting on the loins which causes pain, ventroflexion of the back and a racking gait.
Tennesee Walking Horses are ridden with tight reins cranking the head into an unnatural position to force gait
Icelandic Horses are ridden with tight reins cranking the head into an unnatural position to force gait.
The smooth natural signatire gait of the Tennessee Walking Horse has been bred nearly into extinction by the biglick show influences.
Icelandic Horses are being bred to have more slender, refined bodies and long graceful necks more reminiscent of a tiny saddlebred than a sturdy, stocky and compact icelandic pony. You cannot alter conformation in a gaited horse without sacrificing gait. Icelandic studs and mares have been given high breeding evaluation scores based on heavy mane, and forced unnatural gait while having bad legs and other serious conformation flaws.

Can you think of anymore comparisons? Post them here!
